A Proper Berlin Photobooth Has Landed in Glasgow

There’s a lovely new thing sitting in the foyer at Trongate 103: a proper old-school black-and-white photobooth, brought over from Berlin.

Not one of those digital passport booths that makes you look like you’ve just been caught shoplifting. This is an analogue machine, making real chemical prints. You get four flashes, no filters, no preview, no chance to bin the dodgy ones—and a wee strip of photos to take away at the end.

It’s £5 for a four-image strip, and it takes card, phone payments or coins. Bring your mate, bring a date, bring your mum, or just go in yourself and pull a few faces. The booth is small, private and brilliantly low-pressure—the sort of thing that makes an ordinary afternoon in town feel a bit more memorable.

There’s something nice about not being able to retake everything. You might blink in one frame, look daft in another, and accidentally get one that you’ll want to keep forever. A few minutes later, there it is in your hand: imperfect, slightly unpredictable, and much better for it.

The booth is part of Photoautomat: Berlin / Glasgow, an independent project by photographer Simon Murphy, made with Photoautomat Berlin and Street Level Photoworks. It’s brought a wee bit of Berlin photobooth culture to the city—and we’re very into it.

You’ll find it at Trongate 103, 103 Trongate, Glasgow, in the foyer.

Opening hours: Tuesday–Saturday, 10am–5pm; Sunday, 12pm–5pm.
Cost: £5 for a four-photo strip. Card, phone and coin payments accepted.

Go have a shot. Just don’t expect to look normal in all four.
